Defining Instructional Design Technology
The study and ethical application define educational technology in theory, research, and best practices to advance knowledge. Improving performance and learning through strategic design, management; implementation of learning, resources, and instructional processes (ACET, 2022). Instructional design technology emphasizes the importance of content creation, along with design and education. The implementation of development creates jobs and is able to multiply in numbers if the materials are developed correctly. In 1999 the technology movement changed the industry with computer aid infrastructure.
1940's
"Ralph Tyler is considered to be "the grand old man of educational research" became the director of evaluation of the ground breaking eight year study. The evaluation of 30 schools who were sponsored by progressive education assiociation, of students who stayed in school rather than joining the workforce during the depression. The experiment in curriculum reform, found lack of fariness or justice in college entrance requirements.
1950's
Harvard educational review, "The Sience of learning and the art of teaching" known as the minor revolution in the field of education by B.F. Skinner. In a laboratory vs. classroom environment to achieve a change to a new final behavior desired using reinforcement.
1960's
The launch of Sputnik, the first orbiting space satelite had a major impact on the instructional design process. Instructional materials were developed by subject matter experts and shared with learners to be effective.
1970's
Kemp was one of the first models identified for its design process in 1971 by Jerrold kemp. The number of models were created for systematically designing instruction. A total of 40 models were identified by 1980.
1980's
Psychologists and educators who had training and conducting experimental research were asked to develop training materials for military services
1990's
"The world wide web," The internet connection technology movement computers began to model interactive capabilities. Berners- Lee the son of computer scientist published the first ever website describing the site and how to use it.
Key Scholars
Robert Gagne
Father of Instuctional Design
Robert Gagne published the conditions of learning in 1965. He was the first person to propose different types and levels of learning. The theorys is a methodical process useful for teaching skills. Gagne's nine event of instruction, guided research design, and exploring the instructional theory with the research process. "In 1965 was a key leader for training efforts in WWII and Theorized 9 instructional events for learning process".Gagne
B.F. Skinner
Psychologist Behaviorist
"The science of learning and the art of teaching" Skinner
B.F. Skinner was known to have an impact on behaviorism from 1904-1990. Skinner inspired by John Watson, was the most influential psychologist of the 20th century. The contributions to phsychology were operant conditioning process Skinner's theory of learning, the notion of schedules of reinforcement, introduction of response rates as a dependent variable in reasearch, and creation of the cummulative recorder to track response rates.
Benjamin Bloom
Education Pyschologist
In 1956 Benjamin Bloom with collaborators Max Englehart, Edward Furst, Walter Hill, and David Krathwrol published a framework for categorizing educational goals "Taxonomy of Education Objectives" identifying principal domains of learning. Today this framework is applied to K-12 teachers and college instructors in their teaching. The six major categories are Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Comprehension, Knowlege, and Evaluation "Bloom's Taxonomy".
Learning Theories
Behaviorism
Using stimuli and responses to achieve a new behavior or wanted change. In behaviorism the learners have a blank understanding of what should be done with the information provided. Learning is achieved when the stimulus changes behavior. "Operant conditioning, Skinner". Stimulus can be an emotion, muscular reaction, or organ response. When a learner remembers an action then the learned action can be replicated and demonstrated by action.
John B Watson is the father of behaviorsim.
Mental Map
The process of retaining new information and understanding. When the student learns or reorganizes information by finding new explanations or adapting old ones. When the knowledge of the learner is stored in their memorey this is viewed as change in behavior. Uric DICK Neisser was the father of cognitive psychology.
"Learning is the individualistic and subject to ability and preference, Booth". Build our own knowledge based of the world or personal experience. When the students have a prior knowledge for a personal approach the constructivist will be effective. When students construct their own knowledge based on the personal experience. Example when a teacher shares their own experience with a concept they are expressing social constructivism. "Creating meaning opposed to acquiring it, Ertmer & Newby". Jean Piagent father of constructivism.
5 Trends in Instructional Technology
The projected growth by 2027 is set to increase by 680 million in education technology. There has been a remendous amount of growth demand in training, higher education, and professional workplace.
Remote Learning
Coronoravirus forced a complete shut down for schools, colleges to a remote learning model and a demand for online services. The industry for online learning services and e-learning is expected to grow by 15% annually between 2020 and 2025 reaching a value of 50 billion. I have personally worked remotely since 2014 and not have been expected to be in an office setting since 2013. As a remote trainer having accessibility to a technology device to support all of North America was more than sufficient as long as the device had intranet capabilities.
Lifelong Learning Subscription Services
Rapid pace of technology advancement means skills can quickly become outdated, and developing new strategies for a buisness success is in demand. The ongoing model from the point of purchase mindset is a new education model. When you think about doctors licenses they have to upkeep their education for the life of the license. There are no micro-courses that are offered for the length of the license for a professional. Buisness and employers in the 21st century are looking for flexible ways of having education primary options.
Immersive learning technology- AR and VR
(AR)- Augmented Reality (VR) Virtual Reality will create more opportunities for engagement.
VR train surgeons, fire-fighters and search rescue teams underground. Simulated laboratory and equipment for hands on training allowing students without mistakes. These VR applications will allow students and teachers for virutal field trips to 360 different cities.
AI and Automation in Classroom
When you hear about AI, your thinking about software powered by self- learning algorithms. Adaptive learning where courses adapts to meet learners for easier processing. In China, schools are implementing facial recognition equiped by computer vision algorithms. Access to AI- powered assistants for teachers to have aid during classroom presentations.
Nano- Learning
Nano-learning describes a new EdTech concept were you don't need to learn the information because it will be taught again. The concept to get ultra-bite-sized lessons. Applications such as WhatsApp, Slack or Teams will apply the same principle. The learning platforms impact knowledge such as twitter or TikTok.
ETEC:5000
Education and Philosophy Technology
ETEC:5000 Reflection
In ETEC:5000 we learned the terminology to understand key terms which prepared us to learn new information. In education and philosphy I learned the philosophy of technology through education. Without learning how to use aids, when initaion of technology the steps to learn equipment is crucial to more than just one industry. Technology is initiated in the medical, dental, and auto industry. Learning the key theories within instruction will enhance new learners to practice by writing notes and staying engaged during classroom time to retain new information. As the educator the designer of the lesson plan needs to meet their useability of the student understanding and also push boundaries for the student to grow. and enhance the performance where the need is in the course.
